This carefully designed safari combines the wildlife-rich Maasai Mara with the scenic and biologically diverse Lake Nakuru National Park, giving you opportunities to search for lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards and rhinos alongside many other species. Kenya Wildlife Service highlights the country’s protected areas as destinations where you can observe iconic wildlife including elephants, lions, rhinos, giraffes and buffaloes in their natural habitats. Lake Nakuru is particularly important for the conservation of black and white rhinos and also supports diverse birdlife. You will enjoy game drives, Great Rift Valley scenery and comfortable accommodation while travelling between two of Kenya’s most renowned safari destinations.

Day 1: Nairobi to Lake Nakuru National Park, Great Rift Valley and Game Drive

Your safari begins with an early morning departure from Nairobi as you travel towards Lake Nakuru National Park through the scenic Great Rift Valley. Along the way, you will enjoy views of rolling countryside, farms, hills and dramatic sections of the Rift Valley escarpment. You will stop at a suitable viewpoint where you can appreciate the expansive scenery and take photographs before continuing towards Lake Nakuru. After arriving in the park, you will begin your first game drive through its diverse habitats, including grasslands, acacia woodland and lakeside areas. Lake Nakuru is a particularly important destination for rhino conservation, supporting both black and white rhinos, while other wildlife includes buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, lions and various antelope species. The park is also known for its rich birdlife, with approximately 450 bird species recorded in the ecosystem. After an exciting afternoon of wildlife viewing, you will proceed to your accommodation for dinner and a relaxing overnight stay.

Upon arrival in the Maasai Mara region, you will check into your accommodation and enjoy lunch before preparing for your first game drive. In the afternoon, you will enter the reserve and explore its extensive savannah plains in search of the Big Five and other wildlife. Your experienced guide will look for lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards and other species while explaining their behaviour, habitats and role within the ecosystem. The Maasai Mara is one of Kenya’s iconic wildlife landscapes and forms part of the wider ecosystem associated with large-scale wildlife movements. You may also encounter giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, cheetahs, hyenas and numerous antelope species during the drive. You will search for lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards and other species while also looking out for giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, cheetahs and various antelope. The timing and location of wildlife sightings naturally depend on seasonal conditions, animal movements and the day’s circumstances, making every game drive different. You will return to your accommodation for breakfast or have breakfast arranged as part of the day’s safari programme, followed by further exploration of the reserve.
